Money Canvas: Making Financial Goals Stick

New Feature

Lead Designer

2023

  • Optimized the core user coaching journey, increasing session-to-session completion by 37% via a seamless scheduling and summary UI overhaul.

  • Championed a data-driven accountability loop, resulting in a 22% increase in action item completion by introducing a centralized, visual Action Plan interface.

  • Elevated session engagement, reducing administrative "warm-up" time by 40% and improving user preparedness scores by effectively standardizing pre-session expectations.

Problem

The Challenge: Prior to my intervention, Money Canvas lacked a structured accountability framework.

  • Operational Friction: Coaches spent excessive time manually tracking commitments, leading to admin-heavy workflows.

  • Low User Engagement: Reliance on verbal agreements caused users to forget action items, resulting in stalled progress and poor session attendance.

  • Data Gap: The lack of a baseline measurement prevented the team from quantifying program impact or success rates.

Solution

Working with my design manager, product manager, and engineering team, we collaborated to scope out a new feature called the Action Plan, which would bridge the gap between all the sessions, leading to a connected session experience from the start of their Money Canvas journey, to the end of their journey. This initiative consisted of 3 main parts:

  1. a reworking of the intro and agenda section

  2. an new feature ship, the Action Plan and integrating a new booking system

  3. redesigning the summaries screen to accommodate the new updates

Outcome

We successfully shipped all 3 parts of the main initiative over the course of 9 months. A new agenda screen helped prep users on what to expect at the beginning of each session, with an action plan that helped them build a strong foundation for them to make progress towards their financial goals at the end of each session. The new booking tool, Calendly, integrated into the new action plan and allowed coaches to easily book sessions on the spot, leading to much higher bookings overall. On top of that, the redesigned summary appears after the action plan, reinforcing everything they committed to and learned from the session. With all these combined, user session bookings climbed and retention rates improved dramatically.
