Scale by Design: Establishing the Money Canvas Core Library

Design System

Lead Designer

2025

  • Reduced UI design time by 32% by centralizing 50+ core components in a shared library.

  • Decreased design-related QA bugs by 40% by implementing standardized, tokenized handoff documentation for all page layouts.

  • Reduced onboarding time for new hires by 2 weeks by creating a centralized design documentation portal that establishes a common 'product language'

Problem

Money Canvas faced severe operational bottlenecks caused by a fragmented, undocumented design environment. The absence of a centralized system led to high design debt, inconsistent visual patterns, and inefficient collaboration, which hindered both the design team’s velocity and the product’s visual cohesion.

The Breakdown:

  • Operational Inefficiency: Decision-making was largely ad-hoc and subjective ("vibe-based"), leading to significant design debt that hampered feature delivery and roadmap planning.

  • Visual Fragmentation: Due to the cumulative impact of various design approaches over time, the product lacked a unified identity, resulting in disjointed UI patterns and inconsistent iconography.

  • Handoff Friction: The lack of a component library forced designers to produce custom specs for every new feature, creating an unsustainable workflow that slowed down shipping cycles and drained development resources.

Solution

I established a comprehensive design system foundation from the ground up. This included a centralized library of tokens, standardized iconography, and a custom illustration set to humanize the brand. To ensure long-term success, I collaborated deeply with engineering to align on component architecture, created "delivery-ready" handoff files, and documented reusable patterns that eliminated guesswork for both designers and developers.

Outcome

The new system transformed the product's development velocity and visual quality. By establishing a single source of truth, we achieved total visual cohesiveness across Money Canvas and secondary platforms. The result was an accelerated the 'ideation-to-delivery' phase for new experiments by an estimated 50% by leveraging a pre-approved system of patterns and tokens,, a more intuitive user experience through predictable patterns, and a scalable framework that allows the team to spin up new features in days rather than weeks.
